Pre K, kindergarten, and first grade were spent in Athens, Greece, and then back to the USA to Mclean, VA. There, he spent the rest of his formative years, from second grade through high school. Undergraduate studies found him at the University of Colorado, Boulder where he studied molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. After some traveling, working in a research lab purifying proteins, and career decision making, it was off to San Francisco for Podiatric Medical School.

After graduating from the California College of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Markham entered his surgical residency at the San Francisco General Hospital, VA San Francisco, and Kaiser Medical Centers. Prior to moving to Maryland, Dr. Markham practiced in Huntington, West Virgina. There he was actively involved in training both family practice and podiatry residents in both his private office and as a consultant at the VA Medical Center. He served on the diabetes committee and surgical committee at the local hospital and Surgery Center, respectively.

Dr. Markham became involved with the American Board of Podiatric Surgery in 1989, where for ten years he served in various capacities including Examinations Committee, Oral Examiner, and Field Tester for the Written Board Certified Exam. Similarly, Dr Markham served as a Residency Reviewer for the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) from 1990-2006. In this position, he helped verify that Podiatric residency programs were adhering to the guidelines set forth by the CPME.
